FIREFIGHTERS were kept busy with a number of small fires and a road traffic accident over the weekend.

On Sunday at 8pm they used hydraulic cutting equipment to free two men who were trapped after a two-car crash at the junction of Betsham Road and Station Road in Southfleet.

They were taken to Darent Valley Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, following the crash involving a silver Renault Clio and a white Vauxhall Corsa.

The road was closed until around 9.30pm while oil was cleaned from the road surface.

Earlier, crews quickly tackled a fire caused by a faulty plastic high-voltage electric cable jointing block at Northfleet Mill factory in Crete Hall Road, Gravesend, at noon.

On Saturday at 7pm they dealt with a tyre fire in Dering Way, Gravesend, which was believed to have been caused by a group of youngsters, and at 4.30pm they attended a chimney fire at a house in Foxendown Lane, Meopham.

At about 5.15pm the day before, they also tackled a small fire involving rubber items in East Milton Road, Gravesend.
