Christmas came early in Gravesend last week, as the first snow of winter fell from the roof of the civic centre.

The fake white stuff was brought in, along with festive elves, to mark the launch of Gravesham’s 12 Days of Christmas programme - which will feature a number of special events themed on the lyrics of the song from November 15.

Turning on the Christmas lights kicks off the event, featuring a festival of light parade and a giant bird on stilts - loosley based on a partridge in a pear tree.

Other events will takes place each Friday and Saturday in the run up to Christmas.

Cllr John Burden was at the snowy launch last week and reassured residents that Gravesham won’t be following other councils in cutting back on the Christmas “trimmings”.

He said : ”We know that Christmas is important to the communities in Gravesham on many levels.

“Of course it is of huge religious and spiritual importance but it is also a major part of retail year. By staging the biggest and best range of events we aim to make Gravesend the town centre of choice for Christmas shoppers.”
