FOOTBALL pitches backed by an Italian-based businessman will open with a £500-prize five-a-side tournament.

Piero Iazeolla has invested in Fleet Fives, the new football pitches at Fleet Leisure sports complex, in Nelson Road, Northfleet, which launch next Monday.

Italy's influence on football in this country has grown significantly in recent months, with Roberto Mancini, Gianfranco Zola, and Carlo Ancelotti managing clubs in the Premier League and Fabio Capello in charge of the national side.

Not to be out done, Fleet Leisure has bagged its own Italian supremo in the form of Mr Iazeolla, who has many years' experience in the leisure industry. His company, WSB SRL, already has a network of football centres to its name throughout Europe.

"As an Italian, football is in my blood and opening a football centre in England where there is an equal passion for the game is very exciting," he said.

"I hope to use my experiences in the industry to help make Fleet Fives a place that footballers of all ages and abilities will enjoy."

Mr Iazeolla runs tournaments involving all his clubs in Europe and is pleased to have added an English centre to his network.

Teams from the Northfleet centre will have a chance to play against rivals from around the continent. Details will be launched soon.

He added: "We already have an international tournament calendar for two-a-side and seven-a-side competitions.

"It will be great to have an English representative involved in the shape of Fleet Fives, as of course England is the home of football."

As a Roma fan, Mr Iazeolla has fond memories of Mr Capello's reign as manager there and is taking a special interest in his progress as England head coach ahead of the World Cup. "I hope Mr Capello does very well for England, although I hope Italy do better in the World Cup of course," he said.
