A married former policeman has admitted stealing almost £20,000 from his mistress to pay off his debts.

Chris Sims, 27, of Highview, Vigo pleaded guilty to burglary at Maidstone Crown Court on Friday.

The former Gravesend policeman spoke only to confirm his name, as the court heard how on March 10 this year he used a key given to him by his secret lover to ransack her house on The Avenue, Gravesend, stealing £19,500.

Kevin Toomey, representing Mr Sims, said: “This is a most unusual burglary. He stole £19,500 from the home of his lover to pay off mounting debts to a loan shark who had made threats to his wife and children.”

Sims was granted conditional bail and will be sentenced at Maidstone Crown Court on November 22.
