FLEET Ladies found Wellingborough Diamonds too tough an ask in the third qualifying round of the FA Cup on Saturday.

The visitors, from the league above Ebbsfleet, possessed a speed of pass and thought that was a complete contrast to that the hosts have come up against in recent weeks.

Fleet's chances were not helped when they got off the worst imaginable start as an early attack from the Diamonds forced an error and the ball trickled through goalkeeper Faye Baker's hands after two minutes.

The hosts managed to play themselves back into the game and created chances of their own - the most notable coming from Hannah Gilmour, whose 18-yard piledriver narrowly whistled over.

Baker, atoning for her earlier gaffe, produced a number of smart stops, but she could do nothing about Wellingborough's second of the match when Fleet's defence were simply outnumbered.

Kelly Philpott fashioned an opportunity for herself after the break that she converted to bring Fleet back into contention, but the Fleet Leisure outfit could not sustain the pressure and a third for Diamonds sealed their demise.

Ebbsfleet entertain Millwall in the Kent Cup this Saturday at Fleet Leisure. Kick-off: 1pm.
