A WATER company has been recognised for taking steps to reduce carbon emissions.

Southern Water announced last Wednesday that it had been given the Carbon Trust Standard, which is awarded to companies that reduce their carbon footprint.

The company is currently producing renewable energy at 11 wastewater treatment works in the South East in Combined Heat and Power Units.

By taking bio gas created during the digestion stage of treatment, the units use it to provide 80 per cent of the power used on site. Any surplus is exported to the National Grid.

Southern Water employees have also adopted a 'Carbon Off' policy, including turning off computers, monitors, printers and photocopiers overnight, turning off lights and closing windows to prevent heat loss in winter.

Martin Ross, Southern Water's Carbon Reduction Manager, said: "Cutting carbon emissions is a priority for Southern Water and we are delighted to have our efforts recognised formally with the Carbon Trust Standard.
