Government scraps proposal for new Thames crossing in Swanscombe

One of the three proposed options for a new Lower Thames crossing has been scrapped by the government.
Option B, which would have seen the A2 Swanscombe Peninsula connected with the A1089, in Tilbury, has been discarded by the Department for Transport - who will now choose between Options A and C.
Option A would see the development of the existing A282 Dartford-Thurrock crossing, while Option C would connect the M2 with the A13 and M25 between junctions 29 and 30.
There is also a variant to Option C, which would widen the A229 between the M2 and M20.
A consultation, launched in May, sa Option B receive limited support and found that the proposal would frustrate development in the area.
Dartford MP, Gareth Johnson, says he is “delighted” after vehemently opposing both Option A and B.
He added: “This will be welcome news for local residents and for developers who are keen to make a significant investment in that area.
“The government has recognised the huge potential that exists in Swanscombe and the potential for jobs and the future economic benefits for the Dartford area.
“People in Dartford are fed up with the misery that the Dartford crossing has given them over many years. We don’t want another crossing in this area and this decision does at least rule out one of the locations where we could have had an additional crossing.”
The government will carry out further work to understand the possible impacts on the local areas of the remaining options.
In the meantime, they remain set on introducing ‘free flow’ charging at the Dartford crossing from October next year. This will see the removal of toll booths, with drivers able to pay remotely, similar to the congestion charge in London.
