Wayne Austin stole the gown from a Northfleet home, along with jewellery and electrical equipment worth thousands of pounds, in August.

The 37-year-old, of Princes Road in Gravesend, was arrested shortly after and went on to plead guilty to one count of burglary.

He was sentenced at Maidstone Crown Court on Monday September 10.

The court heard that on the evening of August 6 the occupants of a home in First Avenue left to visit a nearby shopping centre and returned two hours later to find they had been burgled.

Numerous items had been thrown around in the property’s bedrooms, with drawers also emptied.

Among the items stolen was a high performance laptop, tablet computers and a mixture of gold and diamond jewellery.

Austin was arrested on 9 August after CCTV cameras placed him in the area.

One camera recorded him walking towards the victim’s address however another camera, further down the street, failed to pick him up.

This suggested he had stopped off somewhere in between.

About half an hour later the same camera captures him again, this time carrying an orange bag for life wearing a light pink dressing gown.

The victim confirmed both items had been taken from the property.

Det Const Steve Brown, the investigating officer for the case, said: “Austin has caused the victims to this offence a significant amount of distress and I hope that this sentence provides them with some reassurance.

“He cared little for the impact his offending would have on the people he targeted and was motivated purely by the desire to steal what was not his for his own selfish needs.”
