A port worker remains critically ill in hospital after being crushed between a barge and a jetty in Denton Wharf, Gravesend.

Father-of-two Michael Russell, who has worked for the Port of London Authority for around 20 years, was mooring the boat when the accident happened just after 4pm on Friday 18.

An ambulance crew took the 36-year-old to the Royal London Hospital with a fractured pelvis and chest and abdominal injuries.

Martin Garside, of the Port of London Authority, said: “Michael is something of a legend. He is immensely popular and so well respected. Our thoughts are with him and his family.”

The accident is being investigated by the PLA and the Marine Accident Investigation Branch and Health & Safety Executive have been informed.
