Gravesend has become the centre of national attention after a whale was spotted in the area.

The beluga whale was filmed after a sighting in the Thames Estuary off Gravesend, and the video was posted on Twitter.

Ornithologist Dave Andrews posted the Tweet at around 12pm today, which said: “Can’t believe I’m writing this, no joke - BELUGA in the Thames”.

The video shows the beluga skimming the surface of the water.

Dave later tweeted that the whale had been “feeding around the barges”.

A whale also ended up in the Thames in January 2006, reaching central London after losing its way.

Despite efforts to rescue the animal, it sadly died.

A spokeswoman from the RSPCA said: “The RSPCA is aware of reports of a whale - believed to be a beluga - in the Thames.

“We are working with other agencies to monitor the situation and ready to provide appropriate assistance if requested.”
