A PROPOSAL to introduce a controlled parking zone in the town centre has been given the go ahead.

The scheme was approved by Gravesham Borough Council's joint transportation board on Wednesday, September 30.

It is being implemented to avoid commuter car parking blocking up streets when the High Speed rail service begins in December.

A consultation of nearly 3,000 residents saw just 128 objections to the scheme.

Council leader Mike Snelling said: "We think it is right to take action before commuters cars clog the streets in search of free parking and the results of the consultation bear out that view with only a tiny minority of people objecting."

The scheme will be implemented on February 8. To find out what streets are affected, contact the council.
