The council has reached the final 10 in a competition for £10,000 worth of lights

While Gravesend swelters in the June sun, the council is looking to Christmas as it eyes up a £10,000 Christmas lights prize.

Entering the Blachere Illumination Christmas Light Competition, councillors are hoping to light up Gravesend Borough Market for the festive season some six months away.

The council enters the competition, which takes in applicants for the prize from across the country based on their celebration plans, having already come second in 2015, when it picked up a £3,000 prize.

Council leader David Turner said: “Our Christmas programme of events is one of the best in Kent and something we pride ourselves on in involving all community members to be part of.

“If we did win one of the top prizes then we will use the money to light up the area in and around Gravesend Borough Market. Whatever the outcome Gravesend will be a great place to be this December.”
