MOTORISTS have been advised to drive only in an emergency after weather reports have predicted heavy snowfall in north Kent from 3pm today.

Kent Police have warned residents that if their journey is essential, check the latest traffic reports and weather forecast before travelling.

Chief Inspector Andy Reeves, head of Kent Police Roads policing unit said: "Driving in snow and on icy roads is very difficult, even for experienced drivers. Tyres can lose traction when the road surface is wet or icy, which can result in skidding and a loss of control of the vehicle.

"Drivers need to ask themselves whether their journey is necessary if there is very heavy snowfall.

"If motorists do have to travel they should take a fully charged mobile phone, food, water and warm clothes with them in case they do get stranded, as quick recovery cannot be guaranteed in severe weather."

Currently all major routes across Kent are open. For more information check the Highways Agency website at www.highways.gov.uk. To check weather conditions, visit the Met Office website at www.metoffice.gov.uk.
