A MAN who tried to hide more than 50 wraps of heroin in his rectum has been jailed for five years.

Denis Smith, of All Saints Road, Gravesend, was arrested on December 20 last year after officers observed him insert the drugs into his bottom shortly after completing a drugs deal.

Following a thorough search conducted at the North Kent Police Station in Northfleet, 58 wraps of the highly addictive and dangerous opiate were found inside Smith's body.

The 49-year-old was charged with possession of heroin with intent to supply, supply of heroin, possession of heroin and obstruction of a constable during a drugs search.

He pleaded not guilty but was convicted at Maidstone Crown Court last Wednesday and sentenced to five years in prison.

Detective Sergeant Lee Neiles said: "This is an excellent result and sends a clear message to drug dealers that Kent Police will take robust and positive action in order to take them off the streets and prevent the anti-social behaviour they inflict upon others.

"This sentence also reflects the hard work and dedication that my colleague Detective Constable Eleanor Hughes displayed during her investigation, which secured Denis Smith's conviction.
