Ebbsfleet United paid a “fine tribute” to a former club as they faced a Spurs-under 23’s at the weekend.
Thousands flocked to Stonebridge Road to watch the Premier League outfit’s reserve side crash to a 3-1 defeat to the newly promoted Fleet.
Several flares were reportedly set off during the match, marring the Fleet victory in a match set up to honour FA Trophy-winner Paul McCarthy.
The former Fleet skipper died in February of a suspected heart attack, leaving behind his wife and four children.
Family and friends, including former Fleet manager Liam Daish who worked with Mr McCarthy during the club’s successful 2008 FA Trophy run, were among the crowd.
The match against Spurs was announced back in April, with all profits from the day going to the club legend’s family.
Since then The Fleet have gained promotion to the National League, putting them one tier below the professional leagues.
There were more than 2,100 fans attending the match on Saturday, with newly-signed former Manchester City midfielder Luke Coulson getting amongst the goals, and Gravesend-born Ryan Loft playing up front for the Champions League side.
A spokesperson from Ebbsfleet United said of the day: “It was a rewarding afternoon for the 2,130 in attendance and a fine tribute to former skipper McCarthy whose family and friends were at Stonebridge Road to witness it.”
“Quite apart from going down in Fleet history as the man who lifted the Trophy at Wembley in 2008, Paul was a well-loved and popular figure throughout his long association with the club.”
Club secretary during Mr McCarthy’s time with the club, Roly Edwards commented: “On top of everything, he was a great family man. All of us that worked with him grew to love him.”
