A drug dealer who tried to ram his way past police cars near the M25 has been jailed for 10 years.

Matthew Read, formerly of Abbey Road in Abbey Wood was pulled over by police as he came off the M25 at Swanley in December last year.

The 34-year-old had been spotted earlier that day driving his rented Volkswagen Golf to a car park in Chafford Hundred, Essex.

He was seen with another man, who placed a package on the back seat in exchange for a carrier bag which police believe contained cash.

When police attempted to stop Read in Swanley, he tried to ram his way clear, damaging his car and patrol cars.

Police then discovered two carrier bags with eight packages weighing 1kg each.

The packages were found to have an estimated £1.2million of cocaine inside, with a purity rating of more than 93 per cent.

Read pleaded guilty to possessing a class A drug with intent to supply and was sentenced at Maidstone Crown Court on April 22.

DC Dave Bull of the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate said: “Matthew Read’s arrest resulted in a significant amount of class A drugs being removed from the streets of Kent.

“The cocaine was found to be of a purity between 93 and 97 per cent, which is remarkably high and considered to be of import quality.

“Read knew he was in trouble the moment officers attempted to pull him over, putting the safety of other road-users at risk in a desperate attempt to evade arrest.

“He was caught with a huge amount of cocaine in his possession, which I am in no doubt he intended to sell on.

“Drugs ruin lives and I hope the lengthy sentence imposed on Read sends a clear message to others that Kent Police takes a zero tolerance approach to those who seek to benefit financially from the misery of others.”
