THE temporary library running in the St George Shopping Centre has opened.

Following three weeks moving resources from the Windmill Street site due for a £2.5 million refurbishment, the new facility which will fulfil library duties for 14 months opened on Monday.

Christoph Bull, District Manager for Gravesham said: "We have people redirecting customers from Windmill Street, we advertised in the papers and parish magazines and we have signs directing people here. I think we've done all we can."

The new location is significantly smaller, meaning only half the stock of books could be moved, but Mr Bull said users could reserve any book on its catalogue free of charge.

He added: "People can ask for any book in the county and we can order it in. We have also made reservations free for anyone from Kent."

The Windmill Street site is undergoing major work to restore original features to the Carnegie building as well as upgrade facilities.

New computers, improved access, a dedicated local studies area and a community space are all part of the plans.
