THE world's biggest annual sporting event passed through the heart of north Kent two years ago.

In July 2007 thousands of people lined the route of the first stage of the Tour de France, which passed through Dartford and Gravesend.

Following an opening ceremony in London's Trafalgar Square on July 6, the race proceeded through north Kent on July 8 to a rapturous welcome.

At the time, then leader of Gravesham Borough Council John Burden said: "The Tour de France is a massive global event and we should be very proud that the organisers requested Gravesham's involvement, thereby recognising the importance and reputation of the town.

"For many in Gravesham, it will be a once a lifetime opportunity to witness the world's biggest annual sporting event first hand."

After passing through Dartford, 'Le Tour' as it is often called went through Northfleet then into Overcliffe, New Road and exited Gravesend on Rochester Road.
