A GYMNASTICS club earmarked as a training camp for the 2012 London Olympics is set to expand.

The Meapa Gymnastics Club, Cedar Road, Gravesend, is looking to secure funding for the expansion, estimated to be between £700,000 and £800,000, which will give gymnasts some of the best facilities in the country.

The current proposals, which may have to be downsized if the appropriate funding cannot be reached, includes a state-of-the-art tumble track, six beam stations, two full sprung competition floors, more men's gymnastics equipment, a larger reception area, a spectator viewing gallery and a café.

Tomorrow, MP for Gravesham Adam Holloway will visit the gym to look at the proposals, and bosses will discuss with him ways of securing the funding they need.

Head coach Yuriy Zhovtyuk, 32, originally from the Ukraine, said: "This will be excellent news for the club. It will mean we can extend the opening hours, can increase our membership and coach in different disciplines at the same time, improving on our success.

"This will improve the gym to a very high quality, providing training to children and young people across the area, including those with learning needs or disabilities, and will mean the girls' gymnastics facilities will be some of the best in the south east of England."

Mr Zhovtyuk said some aspects of the plans may have to be dropped, but this was currently being reviewed.

He added: "Because of the current economic climate, it might mean that we have to downsize the proposed viewing gallery and café, but this is what we will be discussing with Adam Holloway to work out the best way forward."

The Meapa have been endorsed by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games as a 2012 Olympic Pre Games training camp and because of the links with the Ukraine through the Mr Zhovtyuk, the club are currently in negotiations with the Ukranian Gymnastics squad to train at the venue.
