POLICE have arrested a man on suspicion of attempted abduction of a 15-year-old schoolgirl.

The 40-year-old man, from Gravesend, was arrested on Thursday and taken to North Kent Police Station where he was being questioned.

A police spokeswoman said the arrest was in relation to an incident which happened two days' earlier at The Warren, Gravesend.

The attack happened in a recreation ground when a man allegedly tried to drag the young girl into bushes.

It is claimed he had cycled past the youngster, and as she walked round a corner he asked for the time and apparently lunged at her.

She managed to escape after a struggle, and police sent out an urgent alert to 10 schools to warn pupils about the incident.

The spokeswoman said the arrest was a result of appeals in the media, including the Gravesend Reporter.
