A man is missing after attempting to rescue a young girl in the sea just off Gravesend Promenade yesterday afternoon.

London Maritime Recue Coordination Centre was contacted by a member of the public just after 3.30pm, reporting two people were struggling in the water.

A lifeboat was sent out from Gravesend to the scene and four members of the public entered the water to help the man and girl.

The girl was rescued safely, but the man disappeared under the water.

Other boats from the Port of London Authority and Met Police joined the lifeboat in searching the area along with the Essex Police helicopter.

However, despite their efforts the man was not found.

London coastguard watch manager, Philip Myers, said: “The lifeboat was on scene really quickly this afternoon and everyone involved did everything they could to find the man.

“We will carry out a search of the shoreline tonight but this is increasingly looking like a tragic accident.”
