A MEDIUM who specialises in making contact with dead people has welcomed plans to closely scrutinise the work of psychics.
Following the repeal of the Fraudulent Mediums Act 1951, their work is about to be assessed by Trading Standards for the first time.
Changes in the law mean they could be forced to prove they can do what they claim they can, whether it's contacting a dead relative or predicting your future.
Tony Stockwell, 39, star of Living TV and Zone Reality's Psychic Private Eyes, is due to appear at Woodville Halls, in Gravesend, tomorrow.
He said: "When I first heard that I and many others would face more scrutiny in what we do my initial reaction was 'oh crumbs, this will be awful'. But then you quickly realise if it strengthens and reinforces what we do and safeguards the general public it is a great thing to happen.
"There are a lot of mediums and psychics who are genuine and accurate and do exactly what they say on the box but, as in all walks of life, there are some people who take advantage. If this can be stopped through this scrutiny then you cannot argue against that. I have a moral code and I am extremely experienced so I have nothing to worry about and nothing to hide. But if you do not know what you are doing a lot of damage can be done. These people should be held accountable."
Mr Stockwell will appear at the Gravesend venue for the first time since the law change and is excited about his visit.
The TV star has published three books in his field of expertise and travels around the world offering hope to people whose friends and relatives have died.
He added: "I'm really looking forward to the Gravesend visit. I always get a great reception at Woodville Halls and I am very excited. I get amazing reactions from the audience every time.
"The show is very interactive. I am not a psychic, I will not be telling people the future, whether they have won the lottery or a new lover is on the horizon. I am a medium and I will be making contact for people who have lost loved ones. I can give clear, accurate details of the spirit world through my mediumship.
"I have been doing this for about 20 years and I now see a lot of people who have come because their parents did. My nan died when I was 16 and a friend told me about a medium. I was absolutely mesmerised. It was incredible and since then I have not just dabbled in it I have devoured it
"The same people regularly watch my show. They are not groupies, they simply believe in an after-life. This can have a huge impact on their lives."
Tony Stockwell is at Woodville Halls at 7.30pm on Friday. For details, call the box office on 01474 337774.
