The annual memorial service for General Charles Gordon took place on Friday.

A historic figure, General Gordon is one of the most famous figures in Gravesend’s history having travelled the world to fight battles in China and Africa.

Last week marked 129 years since his death, which was remembered at the memorial gardens which borrow his name, in Riverside Leisure Area.

He died following a 317 day siege of Kartoum by Sudanese rebels on January 26, 1885.

Gravesham mayor, Cllr Derek Sales, was joined by local school pupils and representatives from the armed forces in laying flowers at the foot of the Gordon Memorial.
