Motorists are being advised to avoid the main road through Meopham after part of the road collapsed on New Year’s Day.

It is thought the collapse occurred at about 5am on Saturday due to problems with pipework under the road, resulting in the evacuation of 15 homes and water being cut off to about 250 properties.

Repairs are being carried out by Southern Water, but the road closure at the A227’s junction with Cricketers Drive in Meopham Green is likely to remain for the rest of the week.

Diversions have been put in place, but they are unsuitable for large or commercial vehicles which will have to use the A20 and M25.
