A mother was jailed for eight years today after she was found guilty of killing Kevin McKinley in Dartford.
Michaela Sargeant, 25, of Overy Street, was unanimously convicted of manslaughter by a jury at Maidstone Crown Court yesterday, though she was acquitted of murder.
Her partner, Lewis Wickenden, 26, of the same address, was also found guilty of assisting an offender and sentenced to five years in prison.
On February 12, Mr McKinley went to visit Sargeant and Wickenden having been dropped off near their home by a friend, who stayed in the car with Mr McKinley’s son.
Moments later, the 32-year-old father, of Louvain Road, in Stone, was found in the road with a gunshot wound.
He was taken to Darent Valley Hospital, but was pronounced dead around two hours later.
A post-mortem showed his death was caused by an abdominal haemorrhage caused by a gunshot wound to the left buttock.
Wickenden left the scene minutes later in a black car with the shot gun used. He drove towards Margate with a friend, but later return after a call from Kent Police negotiators.
In an interview with police, Wickenden and Sargeant lied and told officers several men entered their house alongside Mr McKinley, pulling him outside and kicking his head into the curb.
Sargeant later changed her story, revealing the victim had come towards her and so she put the gun to his head and told him to leave her family alone.
Mr McKinley then walked away, but Sargeant claims the next thing she knew was the gun going off.
Det Ch Insp Jon Clayden said: “From the moment Sargeant called 999 to report that she heard gun shots outside, to this case coming to court, both she and Lewis Wickenden lied about the parts they played in the killing of Mr McKinley.
“I welcome today’s sentence and hope it will go some way to allowing Mr McKinley’s family to start moving on with their lives.”
