THE amount of motorbikes or mopeds stolen has more than doubled compared to the same period last year.

From January 1 2009 to March 31 2009, there were 17 motorbikes or mopeds stolen from addresses in Dartford and Gravesham. During the same period this year, the figure is 38.

DS Scott Machin said: "The weather is nicer now and people are starting to get their bikes out. Security is so important in preventing your bike from being taken. Thieves are eagle-eyed in spotting a lapse in security and this makes your bike vulnerable to being taken.

"If you have a bike, make sure it is stored out of view if possible and in the idea world, in a locked and alarmed shed or garage. It's easy to get in and not have time to lock up your bike but those few minutes could be time well spent if it prevents it from being taken."

Many bikes are later found burnt out, making forensic opportunities difficult or in some cases, impossible.
