BRANCHES are closing around the country but a new Post Office was due to open today.
Shinder Singh Sandhu, 56, of Essex Road, Gravesend, is set to run his third Post Office on the corner of Pelham Road and Old Road West, 18 months after a branch closed in Perry Street.
He said: "It is so important. I am excited but we have had to work really hard. When I heard Royal Mail was interested in opening a new branch I applied alongside three or four others and clearly they thought I was best for the job."
With the assistance of his wife Gurdip, 59, and son Arvinder, 30, Mr Sandhu already operates two Post Offices in Maidstone
He added: "We are serving our community, especially pensioners who now do not have to travel to pick up their pensions. It is great that now I will be helping my community, many of whom I know well, and of course expanding my business."
The branch will be open 9am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 12.30pm on Saturday. It will offer the opportunity for people to deposit and withdraw money from accounts in all major banks, offer Road Tax services, issue travel insurance and includes a Bureau de Change.
A Post Office spokesperson said: "We are delighted to be able to confirm the opening of this branch." This is good news for all our customers in the area. The new Post Office will have level access and a brand new, modern, purpose-built serving counter and level access at the entrance." Mr Sandhu has promised to hold a survey with regular users once the branch is established to discover if any other services are needed.
