Four of North Kent’s Olympic judo hopefuls have been knocked out of the competition in the opening days of the games.

Ashley McKenzie from Dartford and Kelly Edwards from Gravesend both lost to members of the Japanese squad when they played on Saturday (28).

Then on Sunday Sophie Cox, who is based in Dartford, lost to the 2008 Olympic silver medalist Ae An Kum of North Korea.

The fourth to leave the competition was Gemma Howell, originally from Wolverhampton but who trains in Dartford, after she was controversially disqualified from her fight on Tuesday (31) for performing a forbidden move.

The Team GB Olympic judo squad trains in Dartford and is hoping for success on home turf after coming back empty-handed from the two last Olympics at Athens and Beijing.
