A Northfleet resident fled their flat this morning after a blaze took hold.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service was called to Haynes Road just after 9am to tackle a bedroom fire, and found the occupant of the home outside. Upon entering the property, firefighters came across a pet dog which had died from smoke inhalation.

A hose reel jet, main jet and ventilation fan were used to put out the blaze, and Red Cross volunteers were called to provide support to the affected resident.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
