A NURSE who cares for terminally ill patients has raised £2,200 after completing the gruelling London Marathon.

Margaret Mary Cowan, 45, of Old Road East. Gravesend finished the 26.2 mile course in four hours 41 minutes last Sunday. Mrs Cowan, who works as a Clinical Nurse Specialist for the Ellenor Lions Hospices, raised money for charity, based in Coldharbour Road, Northfleet, and also for Dreams Come True, a charity that helps fulfil the dreams of terminally ill children.

She said: "This is my second marathon, I ran my first one in 2005 in six hours and three minutes, so I was delighted to finish it this time of four hours and 41 this year.

"It was a great day, the atmosphere is just absolutely superb, and because it was a sunny day, the crowd support was fantastic. It was very tough, and I think it was made worse by the heat, but you just keep going because of the crowd.

"I had support from my husband Alan and my two teenage daughters Fiona and Catrina, and I had supporters of the hospice there at the end to welcome me to the finish line. Thanks to all of them."

Mrs Cowan, who looks after patients at home in Longfield and Hartley, was among 30,000 people who managed to complete the famous race, which saw a host of celebrities taking part including chef Gordon Ramsey, singer Ronan Keating and Katie Price and her husband Peter Andre.

A member of Istead and Ifield Harriers Running club, Mrs Cowan trained hard for the last four months.

"I am very glad I did it, it is very, very emotional on the day, everybody there is doing it for a reason.

"I said after last time that I would never do it again, but it is quite compulsive. So I might do, I am not sure yet."
