A parade will be held from Community Square before the building is officially opened
Gravesend’s historic borough market is preparing to open its doors next month as a ten-month refurbishment programme finally draws to a close.
The market will open to the public on Saturday, December 3, beginning with a grand parade from Community Square led by the mayor, followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10am.
The parade will then proceed to the Christmas Market, which is being hosted throughout the hall, in the under croft area and in the town until 6pm.
Cabinet member for business development councillor Samir Jassal, said: “This is a really exciting time for the town centre, the new traders and shoppers. We’ve really got a market to be proud of here and something which we’re positive will surpass the previous market offering.
“A lot of work has taken place to get it to where it is now and we’re excited for people to see its transformation.
“Most of the new hall will be open and ready for the Christmas rush, but a few things we need to finish in the next few months will be a cafe and street food section.”
Builders have completely refurbished the market roof, with new lights bringing daylight back into the building.
Paintwork has been freshened up and new permanent stall structures constructed, while the market clock has undergone an overhaul.
The renovation work was made possible thanks to a £1.8m grant from the government’s Coastal Communities Fund.
