Pay-by-phone parking in Gravesend

PUBLISHED: 10:30 16 August 2012

Pay-by-phone parking is being introduced to Gravesend putting an end to the bore of trekking around car parks looking for a working ticket machine.

The plan comes following a number of arrests in the area this month on suspicion of theft and vandalism of parking meter machines.

Gravesham council will replace the 42 existing pay machines with new, solar powered ones and will offer the mobile phone payments option by autumn.

The pay-by-phone plan will allow people to get warnings when their paid time is running out so they can top up from anywhere.

Council leader John Burden said: “We are taking the opportunity to modernise our parking payment methods to replace equipment and get a new system in place to help people to avoid fines.”
