A man has been arrested following the huge fire at a Gravesend tyre yard on Saturday.

Huge plumes of smoke could be seen for miles and more than 70 firefighters tackled the blaze in the industrial estate in Canal Road.

The 22-yeard-old was arrested on suspicion of arson and bailed until September 30 while investigations continue.

Kent Fire and Rescue were tackling the incident for more than 10 hours after it was reported at 11.35am.

Twitter users reported that the smoke could be seen as far away as Southend in Essex as could passengers on planes fyling into and out of London airports.

Kent Police also attended the scene and local residents were advised to keep their windows and doors shut as a precaution due to the amount of smoke in the area and surrounding roads were closed for several hours.
