Police are investigating a suspicious fire in Mackenzie Way

Police are working with Kent Fire and Rescue investigators following a suspicious blaze in the early hours of this morning (Friday).

The fire broke out in the first floor of a maisonette, which was unoccupied at the time, in Mackenzie Way, Gravesend, at about 3am.

Fire crews from Strood and Swanscombe joined two appliances from Thameside in tackling the flames and were able to leave the scene at about 5.45a. Police remained and started an investigation.

Neighbour Adam Harper, 32, was woken by the emergency vehicles.

He said: “Amazingly I didn’t hear a thing, it was the flashing lights flickering on the window that woke me. It must have been very early but I don’t know exactly when.

Fellow neighbour Margaret Stedman, 63, added: “I woke up around 5.15am, I kept seeing the lights reflecting in the back garden.”

Police would like to speak to anyone who has information about the blaze or may have seen people acting suspiciously in the area at around the time of the fire.

Call DC Eleanor Hughes on 01474 366091 or Kent Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.
