Biomedical engineer Philip Nicholls said: “I’ve not seen one here in the six years I’ve been here. My dad spotted it then got everyone from the pub to have a look.”

It was expected to be released from the basin until the early hours of this morning.

Spectators gathered to watch the animal, reportedly around 3ft long, which had become stranded.

Reporting last night on twitter, @Barbus59 said: “Went to Gravesend Canal Basin to see the porpoise. It’s trapped in there until 5am when the gates can be opened again. Only about 3’ long.”

Another, @wavecrestglen, added: “Saw a porpoise yesterday in the Thames close to my office in Gravesend. First time I’ve ever seen one in the Thames.”
