A town centre rat run will be closed to protect pedestrians following the installation of a new gate

The gate, which will be similar in appearance to the barrier installed at the start of the pedestrianised area of Windmill Street, will be placed at the western end of Manor Road, outside the Manor Shades pub.

Work will begin at the end of the month, with completion expected in October.

Manor Road is restricted from use by traffic between 10.30am and 4,30pm but with no enforcement the road has been used by drivers as a short cut to bypass the town’s one-way system.

The gate will be closed between these hours to protect pedestrians, though deliveries to shops by goods vehicles and access to garages on the street will still be permitted.
