Bosses overseeing repairs at Gravesend Town Pier are “90 per cent sure” works will complete today (Wednesday).

The pier was closed earlier this month after it was deemed unsafe when two bolts which connect the pier with the walkway came off.

During the closure the Gravesend to Tilbury ferry was temporarily stopped, and then shifted to West Street Pier from the start of last week.

But manager at the Town Pier, Stuart Tranter, remains hopeful the pier and its ferry service, the last Thames crossing until the river meets the sea, could return tomorrow.

He said: “Unless there is an unforeseen technical reason, I’m confident that work will be completed today.”

A spokesperson from Jetstream Tours, which operates the ferry service, did not know when works were due to complete, but said: “We expect our ferry operation to return to normal as soon as we are told the pier is fully operational.”
