WHY not head to the river this weekend as the first of the summer's three river race events get underway with the 164th Town Regatta.

Races will be held on both days at Gravesend's promenade, alongside a display by RNLI volunteers. On land performances will be hosted by East 17s Terry Coldwell.

The weekend's festivities will be followed by the Summer Regatta on July 24 and the Shrimpers Regatta in August 28 to 29.

Ian Stevenson, of the Town Regatta Committee, said: "We are very lucky in Gravesend to have such a great history with the river.

"This year we have a lot of attractions on top of the river racing, there's something for everyone.

"In Gravesend we also benefit from the RNLI Lifeboat station on our doorstep. The crew will perform a rescue display and as the organisation survives solely on donations they have a fund-raising stall on the promenade too."
