A MAN spent more than an hour clinging to a roof top chimney after he tried to escape from police.

Crowds gathered outside the house in Wilberforce Way, Gravesend after he climbed onto the roof at about 4pm on Tuesday.

Witnesses said the man climbed out of a bedroom window as police knocked on the front door of the house.

A police cordon was set up blocking entry to part of the road, and residents watched as officers tried to talk him down. One witness, who did not want to be named, said: "Police vans arrived and went to arrest him, but he tried to escape by climbing out of his window, and climbing onto the roof.

"It looks pretty dangerous."

Another witness, neighbour John Stanley, said: "I heard a lot of shouting earlier in the day, and I was inside I heard the police arrive, but there were no blues and twos.

"I think he climbed onto the roof to try and escape, but there wasn't anywhere he could go."

After just over an hour, the man finally agreed to come down, but police ladders were not long enough to reach him.

Firefighters arrived and used specialist ladders to remove the man, who was then seen by paramedics after injuring himself in the incident.

Police confirmed the man was safe and well, and the road was reopened at about 5.45pm.
