COUNCIL staff have been praised for their efforts in keeping refuse, recycling and repairs going during the recent bad weather

More than 95 per cent of staff kept all dustcarts and recycling vehicles on the road throughout the snow and icy conditions up to Christmas Eve.

Despite appalling conditions on many side roads on Friday, December 18, 75 per cent of refuse and recycling collections were made. By Christmas, any backlog was thought to have been collected. Gravesham Borough Council leader Mike Snelling said: "It was a daunting task keeping everything running as close to normal as feasible, but the dedication of the council's staff was admirable and deserves the gratitude of everyone."

Street cleaning continued with crews keeping town centre roads as clear as possible. On the Friday, street cleansing teams were used to grit the town centre, car parks, cemeteries and sheltered housing. Sheltered housing areas were gritted again on the Monday and Tuesday.
