A MARRIED Salvation Army member is facing a long prison sentence after he was found guilty of having a sexual relationship with a teenage girl 24 years his junior, writes Ed Riley.
Carl Shelton, 44, of Thong Lane, Gravesend, was convicted on Tuesday (31) of two charges of indecent assault, two of sexual activity with a child and one of indecency with a child following a week long trial at Maidstone Crown Court. Shelton denied all the allegations against him relating to a relationship he had with a 14-year-old girl who visited the home he shared with his parents in 2003. He was a member of the Gravesend Salvation Army band, as were his parents.
Prosecutor Caroline Knight said: "There was a series of sexual offences in the course of a relationship between the complainant and Mr Shelton.
"The defendant would regularly engage her in sexual activity, at home, and in his car in secluded areas."
The court heard they performed oral sex on each other, and she lost her virginity to him in October 2003.
Shelton, who married in 2006, is alleged to have had full sexual intercourse with her "a dozen times or more" according to prosecutor Ms Knight.
In May 2003, the court heard that the victim first started to notice a sexual element in their relationship and in the following September, she received her first sexually explicit text message from Shelton, who was 38 at the time. Ms Knight added: "He asked her whether she wanted to have sex with him. She was shocked, but naively flattered at the attention from an older man."
Gravesend-born Shelton would pick the girl up from her home and then take her back to his house, where he started teaching her about sex, and the sexual activity between the two began. In October of that year, it was agreed between them that the girl would lose her virginity to him.
A full sexual relationship continued until July 2004. The court also heard he would make the girl watch adult pornography with him, and that he encouraged her to shave her pubic hair. Later in police interviews she said that he would wear thongs and would regularly shave his pubic hair.
Ms Knight said the relationship became too much for the girl and on the last occasion she slept with Shelton realised it had to stop.
She reported Shelton to the police in December 2007, aged 18-years-old. After his arrest, he was asked to strip and it was revealed he was wearing a thong and had shaved pubic hair, just as the girl had described. Shelton was acquitted by the jury of two other counts of indecent assault.
Judge Charles Macdonald QC adjourned sentence until the week of April 28 and said: "The outcome will inevitably be a long prison sentence."
