A PRIMARY school is celebrating being recognised as one of the most successful in the country.

Meopham Community Primary, on Longfield Road, Meopham, is in the top one per cent in the UK for its Key Stage two SATS results.

The statistic released this week relate to examinations taken by the school's Year 6 pupils last May and also placed Meopham as one of the top four schools in Kent.

Headteacher Martin Clinton said: "When we first got them we obviously realised they were extremely good, but we have only just been informed about how it relates to other schools nationally". The SATS results are also split into 13 categories to be assessed across Gravesham, and Meopham took first place in 10 of these.

Highlights included 100 per cent level four or above achieved in English, reading, writing and science.

He added: "It isn't just a case of the kids coming here and automatically progressing to achieve these results. In fact if you look at our results at the younger level we finish in the middle so a lot of work has gone in.

The key for me is getting parental support. The parents give the children all the right messages telling them to work hard and behave themselves.
