Recession-hit shops were given a much-needed boost by a hectic weekend of Christmas shopping at Bluewater that saw 240,000 people through the doors.

The busiest retail weekend of the year saw a six per cent increase in shoppers compared to the same two days last year.

The shopping frenzy was impacted by the “Mega Days” Bluewater is running from December 10 to 22 when shops are open from 9am until 11pm.

The shopping centre said it expects even bigger crowds this weekend as people do their last minute shopping for presents.

Robert Goodman, Bluewater’s general manager, said: “This is our fourth ‘payday’ weekend in a row, and our busiest weekend of the year so far.

“This Saturday was different to the previous weekends, however, as we’re now into our Mega Day fortnight.”
