A 21-YEAR-OLD student has come one step closer to being the first director to send an advert into space.
Dan Fryer, of Wellington Street, Gravesend, is shortlisted for the final of the You Make it, We Play it campaign, to film an advert for Doritos crisps.
Mr Fryer, an English Literature student at Canterbury University, enlisted the help of seven friends to film, edit and act in the animated short video. After being shortlisted he won a place at a Brighton film school in August and is in the running to see his advert broadcast on national television and to scoop £20,000
The winner will be flown to a space centre in Norway to see the film become the first advert broadcast into space for 24 hours to a range of solar systems.
Mr Fryer said: "It's great to be recognised as having creative talent and winning a place at the Brighton Film School is mind-blowing!
"I have never directed anything before and producing the ad was good fun. I was sitting in a café one day eating the worst onion soup I have ever eaten, and one of my friends came and told me there was a competition to win £20,000 for designing an advert.
"I thought anything was better than eating onion soup.
"I came up with the idea for the advert. We filmed it over a day and took three days to edit it."
His advert, titled The Race, is the most watched clip on the website. It features his friends dressed up as crisps, running through woodland in a race to decide which crisp makes it into a packet of Doritos.
Mr Fryer added: "It would be great to see it on television and it's cool that it could be broadcast into space.
"I'm keeping my fingers crossed that my friends, family and the people of Kent vote for me, so I can go on to win the whole competition."
