Council warns of bogus boiler repair scam
Dartford Council is warning tenants of a male phoning and claiming to be from Swale Heating.
The man tells the tenant that the firm is carrying out boiler repairs on behalf of the council, and then attempts to book an appointment with them for the following afternoon.
While Swale Heating does not currently have a contract to carry out work on behalf of the council and has confirmed the person making the phone calls is an imposter and does not work for it.
The council points out criminals have previously been known to pose as builders, maintenance staff, water or electric officials etc. to gain access to properties, and steal items once inside.
It said: “They will often say that the work is urgent, in an attempt to get you to let them in quickly rather than allowing you to check their identity.
“Please do not allow that to happen, always ask to see their identification, and if you are in any doubt don’t let them in and contact the Housing repairs team on 01322 343800.
“If you are uncertain if telephone callers are genuine, do not arrange an appointment or agree to let them in to your property.
“If someone knocks at your front door claiming to be carrying out repair work, do not let them in unless you are certain they are legitimate.
“If necessary, use the internet or phone directory to look up the details of the company they claim to work for, and phone to check if they are carrying out work in the area.”
Anyone with any doubts is urged to call Kent Police (on 101) for further advice.
