George and Lily Marshgreen, 90 and 89 respectively, were married on December 22, 1942 when George was in the Air Force and Lily was helping with the war effort.

They went on to have three children, one of which lives in Australia where they were headed to celebrate their platinum anniversary but George fell ill just before the trip, although he is fully recovered now.

Having received a letter from the Queen to commemorate their 60th and 65th wedding anniversaries, they now have a third to put on the wall, which reads: “I send you my warm congratulations of the celebration of your platinum wedding anniversary and my good wishes for a very happy Christmas.”

Asked what the secret to a long and happy marriage was, Lily replied: “Goodness only knows. Just living one day at a time.”
