Pair witnessed indescribable horror

A couple from Swanley have told of their terror after being caught in the Tunisia shootings.

Glenn and Anita Whitehead told the Guardian they had been relaxing on the beach when they heard shots and saw a man with a machine gun.

They had at first thought the shots were fireworks.

“He was shouting something, I don’t know what,” Mr Whitehead, a scaffolder, told the paper.

He shouted at his wife to run, as bullets flew around their heads. A person lying next to them fell dead.

Mrs Whitehead tripped in the sand as others ran screaming beside them, but the pair managed to get to the safety of their hotel.

When they went back outside, there were bodies in the foyer and by the pool, and blood everywhere.

“I looked around the beach and all I could see were dead people covered in towels,” said Mr Whitehead.

“Where we were lying were a German mother and daughter. When I got back one of them was covered over, dead.”
