A burglar who beat his victim over the head with a handgun and threatened to shoot them has been found guilty by a jury.

31-year-old Dean Reid, Dartmouth Road, Sydenham, forced his way into the property in Elm Road as the two occupants returned home from walking their dog.

The man and woman reported seeing Reid run towards them appearing to hold a handgun.

He threatened to shoot one of the victims, and beat the man on the head as they tried to shut him out of the home.

Reid then threatened to shoot the woman if she did not reveal where the valuables were kept.

After making his victims remove any jewellery they were wearing, and ransacking the house Reid ran off with around £12,000 worth of items.

The incident happened on July 11 last year.

Reid denied the charges following an arrest on August 5, but a jury found him guilty at Maidstone Crown Court on January 28.

He will be sentenced on March 17.
