The fire caused thousands of pounds worth of damage

Gym-goers have returned to Cygnet Leisure Centre after a fire caused more than £1million worth of damage.

The fire temporarily closed the centre in Old Perry Street in Northfleet in March, but most facilities were up and running again within two weeks of the blaze.

On October 12, the centre’s gym reopened after some major refurbishment works.

Wayne Pedrick, head of facility management at Gravesham Community Leisure Limited, said: “We were absolutely devastated for our members and the staff following the fire at Cygnet, the damage was much worse than we originally thought and due to this the work has taken longer than we first hoped.

“The repairs have cost more than £1.4million which should give some indication of the extent of the damage caused.

“We can’t wait for our members to see the gym and hope they are as excited about the changes as we are.”

Returning to users, the gym now offers brand new equipment including a free runner, stairmaster and a frame.
