THE son of a taxi driver murdered by a drunk passenger has told of his shock after a cabbie was viciously assaulted when he refused to hand over his car keys.
Gordon Bailey, a driver for 369369 Taxis, in Pelham Road South, Gravesend, was attacked on Monday at around 11pm.
It comes weeks after driver Steve West of Phoenix Taxis was attacked in Perry Street, Northfleet, and just over two years since the murder of Gian Chand Bajar, of Darnley Road, Gravesend, who was murdered by Luke Aujila.
Mr Bailey picked up a man and a woman from the Railway Inn in Sole Street and was directed to Kent Close in Paddock Wood. When they arrived, the man got into the front of the car, demanded the car keys and then assaulted him, causing two black eyes, a broken nose and a bruised face.
Son of Mr Bajar, Telu, said: "It's shocking, and I send my sympathies to his family, my thoughts go out to them.
"The police will work hard to find the people responsible, like they did to catch my father's killer and I hope they find him.
"When I hear things like this, I don't feel anger.
"It shouldn't happen, but it is inevitable if there are not changes to the legal system to make the sentences for violent crime harsher, which will act as a deterrent."
Mr Bailey is recovering in a hospital in East Grinstead, West Sussex.
A spokesperson for 369369 described him as a "very nice gentleman".
The male attacker is white, 5ft 9ins, about 20-years-old, wearing a light blue t-shirt. The woman, who is white, is a similar age, and 5ft 6ins. She had dark hair in a ponytail and wore dark trousers.
Contact Kent Police on 01732 379217 with information.
Gavin Clark, 20, of Snelling Avenue, Northfleet, and Stephen Richardson, 33, of Greenhill Road, Gravesend, pleaded guilty to affray and assault causing actual bodily harm relating to the attack on Mr West.
They are to be sentenced on August 3.
